Adults with disabilities would prefer to work

As Social Security Administration disability benefits have become politicized in the media and by politicians, there has been a popular, yet unfounded, belief that many who receive disability just want to sit at home and not work. A recent report from the Kessler Foundation sets the record straight, finding that more than two-thirds of adults with disabilities are “striving to work” and many are working despite their health troubles.

VA accused of changing dates on disability claims

After U.S. veterans return home from stints in battle overseas, many suffer from physical injuries, mental illness and other debilitating symptoms that need to be treated. Sometimes, they simply need a helping hand to get restarted in life; the Department of Veterans Affairs is supposed to be there for them to provide veterans benefits. However, a recent report from the inspector general found that at least one VA office has been changing the dates on claims to make it appear as though the department was moving through its growing backlog at a quicker rate.

Forbes calls proposed VA rule ‘attack’ on veterans, families

A new proposed rule from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is being called an “attack” on veterans and their families by Forbes. Alesha Ebeling writes on Forbes’ website that this rule attempts to prevent people from giving away their assets and applying for veterans benefits, but she notes that veterans believe this may cause harm by making a difficult process even harder and more arduous.

Gland injury during concussions may worsen PTSD for veterans

The horrors of war have left many U.S. veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. Many soldiers have been forced to turn to veterans benefits, treatment and more to get the help they need to cope with life after war after experiencing concussions from bomb blasts or extreme stress. A recent study from Saint Louis University found that some veterans may not suffer from a stress disorder, but hormonal irregularities from gland damage suffered during a concussion.

More than 100,000 veterans await VA benefits

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is going through some hard times right now, as their former leader Eric Shinseki recently stepped down. However, no one is going through as hard of a time as the veterans awaiting their VA benefits. According to an internal report released this week, approximately 100,000 veterans across the country are facing long waiting periods to see doctors.
